Posted using ShareThis

Regarding this bit of news, I LOVE Christian Siriano. Not only does he make beautiful clothes, but he loves that more options are coming out for us big girls. Plus, by reading this article, I learned that they will make the clothes on his website in custom sizes if they don't offer it, which I didn't know. Way to go, Christian!

Regarding the post of a certain celebrity blogger...

I will be the first to admit, I read Perez Hilton's fashion blog. Celebrity gossip entertains me. I was so excited when he started the fashion blog because it was more about a topic I loved.... fashion. But I read a blog where he is talking about how Hot Topic's sales had plummeted, blaming it on Kristen Stewart (of Twilight fame.) He also mentioned in the post that Torrid's sales are up 2.9%! Great news, right?

Until he said, "Probably because of all the extra fabric needed."

Really Perez? Was that necessary? For somebody that has been talking about how models are airbrushed skinnier (thankyouverymmuch, Ralph Lauren), to make a backhanded remark like that was just wrong. How about a stylish company that is catering to an underserved demographic? Have you looked at the stats on the sales of plus size clothing lately? They make up a large part if the women's clothing market, but are not always given stylish options because it's not the "look" companies are looking for.

You can pick on the big people, Perez. Just remember that you used to be one of them and we will not take this sitting down.

It's the most wonderful time of the year!!!

So it's that magical time of year again. The holidays! Plenty of parties to attend, people to impress, and family to visit. I am a strong believer in the fact that the first impression you leave upon a person is the one that lasts. It is also the impression that could make or break what a person thinks about you. Think about it.... would you rather talk to a guy in baggy sweats and a wife beater or a guy in a nice suit? Your answer will hopefully prove my point. With that being said, here are some nice holiday dresses that could impress your friends, families, and perhaps, a new love!
So here's a cute dress from Torrid. History will show that most people wear dark colors to holiday parties. Why should you conform? This has color without being crazy bright and summery. Aqua is a great color. The looseness in the middle of the dress hides a stomach that you may not want to show. And if you have great legs and arms, even better!

This is a cute number from Wet Seal. Once again, it's dark with a kick of color. I don't know if you can tell from this picture, but the skirt as shades of brown, yellow, white, and cream in it. The color on the bottom detracts from any problems you might have in that area while showcasing your chest. Always a plus in my book!

These two dresses are just a few of the many options out there! Figure out what you want to hide or show off, the colors you look good in, and a style of dress you like. Then get to work finding the dress that works best for you! Good luck!

Another show stopping gown from Monif C.!!!!

Let's face it. This gown screams "I'm too good for you, and I'm not afraid to show it!" While this might be a little bit over the top for some, it's a perfect combination of sexy and noticeable for others.

At $495, it might have to be your expensive piece for the season. For the quality and the star power this gown brings to the table, it's worth it!

From Full Figured Fashion Week

All I have to say is, finally! The press release is below.

PRESS

“Full Figured Fashion Week Hits New York City, Making History, and Spearheading a Global Movement”

For Immediate Release

Fashion Week has grown into a prestigious event recognized worldwide for its success in presenting stunning couture fashion shows in upscale venues. For the first time in history, a partnership of independent fashion designers, retailers, event producers, models and plus industry businesses, will join forces to bring the fashion week experience to the curvy consumer. Full Figured Fashion Week (FFFWeek) will proudly launch in New York City, June 25-27, 2009.

In America alone, there are 40 million women over size 14, spending $25 billion a year on clothing, or a quarter of all clothing sales, according to American Demographics. So, why isn’t there a Fashion Week event dedicated to showcasing fashions available to the curvy consumer? There wasn’t...until NOW!

Produced by DeVoe Signature Events, a special events and management company, specializing in events for plus size consumers for over 10 years, the organizers of FFFWeek are very excited about creating an event that will not only showcase plus size designs, talented designers, retailers, local boutiques and “real size” models, but it is hoped that the event will also increase economic development in the area of plus size fashion design, clothing merchandising and plus modeling.

The ancillary events for FFFWeek will create even more networking opportunities for designers, boutiques and businesses as this highly anticipated three-day fashion extravaganza will debut before an audience of over 1500+ plus size fashion enthusiasts, style mavens, models, boutiques, vendors and the media, while providing an inaugural showcase of talented designers, models, stylists and plus industry businesses that specialize in the needs of the plus size consumer.

The grand finale event, which will be held at 6:00 PM on Saturday, June 27th at The Cathedral, one of New York’s most preeminent and fashionable venues, will feature the collections of high-end plus size fashion boutiques, retail stores and local and out of state independent designers.

Sponsors for this inaugural event include, Plus Model Magazine, The Voluptuous Woman Company, Diva’s Unlimited Inc., IPNY Travel and a number of other businesses devoted to the advancement of plus size fashion and consumer product marketing.

Sponsors, Designers, Models and Vendors interested in participating in the event should visit www.fffweek.com/registration.html and download the applicable forms.

Plus size clothes at Wet Seal

I don't know what caused me to stumble across this tidbit of information, but Wet Seal has a limited selection of plus size clothes only available online. Sizes are available up to 24 and 3x. There are a couple of things I could definitely rock. All at reasonable prices, of course! This hot zebra print dress is only $28.50!
This jacket is available in four colors and a steal at $22.50.
This shirt would make a great club shirt and is on sale for $9.99!

Forever 21, take note. Wet Seal knows that a true 2x is not a 15/16.

It's that time of year again.....

Prom season!

And what's not to be excited about? There are more styles and selections available for big girls than there were when I went to my prom almost 10 years ago. But another thing is also glaringly obvious.... we have a long way to go as far as providing big girls with an equal amount of CUTE options for prom season.

With that being said, I will present a fabulous find for prom. If you want it, it's at Macy's, on sale! Now, why do I like this dress? So glad you asked. First of all, blue is in, and this dress is a couple of gorgeous shades of sky blue. Secondly, the dip dyeing (ombre) of this dress will definitely make you stand out in the crowd because it's not all one color, and it isn't tacky looking. Third, the detailing of this dress at the bust draws the attention upward, which will take the attention away from any problem areas you may have.

Like in the picture, one statement necklace and a simple hairstyle will serve this dress justice. Too fancy hair will take away from the dress, and too much jewelry will be distracting. Just keep it simple.

Obsession #2

If I had $385 to spend on this dress, trust and believe it would be in my closet! It's so brightly colored and perfect for spring, it makes me want to consider giving up my no-sleeveless rule I've made for myself. This is done by Monif C, a plus size contemporary designer also featured in Rip The Runway 2009.

Look out world, here we come!

My current item obsession.

I don't even know how much it is, but I want it BADLY! This coat is from Douglas Says, one of the designers featured on BET's Rip The Runway 2009. This is from his Plus U collection and I must say that it's totally my style. From the hoodie, to the belt, to the pockets, I just need a coat like this in my life.

Faith21

Faith21, Forever 21's plus size clothing line, is now available in select stores and online. While most of the pieces leave me feeling underwhelmed, there are a few that stand out.
This shirt is really cute. Metallic colors are in now, and tiger stripes are as well. Also, at $15.80, it is a very reasonable price to be on trend! This dress is very artsy, and also reasonably priced. It's a little shorter than I would like it to be, but would look great over some leggings!
This t-shirt is very cool looking to me. The portrait is metallic stripes, and there is a zipper running up the side of the portrait. Very creative and different. I would definitely wear this.

Even though the in store locations are limited, this could very well develop into an awesome line! Sizes comes up to 2X (in their eyes, a 2X is a 15/16.)If they expand their size selection, I would totally be all for it!

Another great style source!

Since I can't sleep right now, just thought I would add on a post about another website I found while searching on Google. Missphit was created by a husband/wife designer team who saw the need for trendy plus-sized clothing to be readily available to the market. I'm so glad they did, because there are things I want to buy off of the website already! Below are pictures of a few of my favorite things off the site. It seems as if they make shirts, dresses, and coats (at least, that's all I see!)Leggings would work for this tunic top. It also comes in pink and white, which is a huge bonus for me.This dress also comes in two additional colors. It's girly, ruffly, and really my style!
This tunic made my skinny friends jealous. They were so crushed when they realized that this didn't come in their size.

I have ALWAYS been a hoodie girl, so I zoomed in on this shirt almost immediately! It's not a bummy hoodie, it's really nice and probably could be used as a dress shirt for work! The versatility is what makes it so attractive.

So visit the website, http://www.missphit.com. What do you have to lose? Besides your money, of course!

Check out this company!

I just recently rediscovered a catalog I used to peruse when I was in middle and high school. Alloy has a lot of nice clothing at an inexpensive price. Some of the trends should be avoided at all costs if you are over the age of 20, but there is also some really nice clothing in here at a decent that shouldn't be ignored if you are looking for a deal. A lot of their clothing is available up to a junior size 25 or 3xl. Not everything is available in plus sizes, but there are enough options within the catalog for you to consider checking it out. For example....

I am a big fan of Transformers, as I watched the show often when I was growing up. So this multi-colored tee caught my eye immediately. Not too juvenile, but just my style. This ruffled dress is also a welcome surprise within the catalog, and more affordable than Lane Bryant. Wore alone or paired with some leggings, this would make a great work ensemble.

Burning out!

So now to talk about a new trend emerging in spring fashion.... the burnout tee. Basically, the fabric is thinner in some places than others.... enough to have a sense of what your skin color or bra color is underneath your shirt. These are very comfy tees, and a great item to add to your spring/summer wardrobe, as they usually are a lightweight fabric.
Combine three trends at once with the purple zebra print burnout tee from Torrid. After all, purple is the color of royalty, and you are a princess! Animal prints are so in right now, and so is the color purple (even if it is a fall color, but I won't fault them for that.)
Or maybe you like your burnout tee a little more refined and classy. This zebra print burnout tee from Ashley Stewart is more your style. Pair it with a black tank and some black pants to show the world your stripes come in all varieties.Maybe you don't even like animal print shirts. In which case, try this striped burnout tee from Old Navy on for size. I may be a little prejudiced... I bought this shirt 2 months ago. It's comfy and bright, which makes for a nice spring shirt to add to your closet.

Check out the Goodwill!

Thanks to another DC area fashion blog, I accidentally stumbled upon the Goodwill's auction site, shopgoodwill.com. I am glad I did! There are deals to be had there (for example, a nicely maintained Coach bag auction price is currently at $59!) This isn't specifically plus size stuff obviously (and not even all about clothes), but I just had to let you in on the secret. I've got my eye on an indian head penny charm bracelet!

Isn't it great when fashion and charity team up for a great cause?

A store I just found out about

Thanks to my coworker Keena, I have a store that not everybody may have heard of... it's called Dots. Not all of their clothes are available in big sizes, but there are quite a few things I would buy, such as their stylish denim vest, which is only $18. Detailed with a belt, boning and a zipper, it is an inexpensive way to update your wardrobe! There is also a HOT pink houndstooth bra, which is my favorite trend at the moment. It's only $6, which makes me question the durability of the bra, but it's cute and it's underwire!

While it would be great if everything was available in plus sizes (there is a great "I'm not short, I'm fun size" shirt that would be perfect for me), there's no point in dwelling on the negative things. So just think of this as another option when buying new clothes/accessories/etc.

Faith 21

Great news! Forever 21 will be launching a plus size line in the spring called Faith 21. I, for one, think this is a brilliant idea for the company. It offers yet another alternative for us big girls that is sure to be trendy.

Let's just hope that they make it up to a size 28 and not 18. Because that would really suck.

Feeling brave?

Maybe you are tall, and you like the feeling of crushing little people beneath your mighty heel. Or you're compact, like me (at 5'3") and want to feel like you are a normal height (for once!) Regardless, killer heels, and more specifically, boots, will put you on the right track! Boots are good for spring, fall, and winter (although, wearing these babies in the snow and ice is probably not the best idea.) You could wear them in the summer, but leather is awfully hot and let's be honest, who even wants to wear shoes in the summer? That being said, I present my present boot obsession...
The black plunder buckle strap boot, found at Torrid, can make you feel both powerful and sexy! This beautiferous wonder will increase your height by about four inches, and boost your confidence tenfold. Just practice walking in thse first, I wouldn't want you to break your ankle (or any other part of your body) walking in these! The straps are a nice touch. They remind me of a dominatrix and come to think of this, you would probably look good wearing these boots..... and nothing else!
These are great for the big girl because it is meant for a wider foot and calf (will fit 16" calves.)

Let's start over.

ABOUT THIS BLOG

This is Big Girl Style. This is a fashion blog, geared toward plus sized women. I created this blog for several reasons. Trends will be deciphered, and there will be links to clothing that accurately represents each trend, along with how to wear these trends without looking like a fool. If possible, examples will also be attached. Celebrity fashion as it relates to plus size style will also be discussed. Fashion is not limited to clothing; it also includes accessories, shoes, lingerie, and so forth. The clothing discussed will be pulled from all different places. I will try my hardest to find fashions at affordable prices, because I'm not rich and and it's likely that you aren't either. If the item I find is expensive, I will try to find something similar at a reasonable price.

ABOUT ME

My name is Kim, and I am a big girl. Married, no kids and no pets (yet!). I live in Lorton, VA, a suburb outside of Washington D.C. I have fashion in my blood. I currently attend Marymount University in Arlington, VA and I am majoring in fashion design. I define my style as preppy urban. I like color, plaid, and animal print, but also try not to make it too crazy. Yellow and pink are my favorite colors. Some of my most recent purchases include a pink neon tiger stripe shirt, green colorblock skirt, and blue short-sleeve ruffle blouse. My favorite stores are Old Navy and Torrid. I read People Style Watch and In Style religiously.

So I hope this blog inspires you just as much as I was inspired to create it. Just because you are big doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your style for it. You just have to know where to look!
